Step 4: Reality Checking

Once we have improved our dream recall and learned to be aware of dream signs, we will come to a point where we think we may be dreaming. Reality checks are going to help us prove if we are dreaming or in the real world.

Here are some common mistakes people make in dreams that stop them becoming lucid:
  • Asking someone else if they are dreaming. Dream characters will usually tell you that you are not dreaming.
  • Assuming that what you are experiencing is too lifelike to be a dream. Lucid dreams can look and feel real.
  • False awakenings can occur where you believe that your lucid dream attempt failed and you get out of bed, but you are actually still dreaming.

Neither of these problems will occur if you perform reality checks. Read SuggestedRealityChecks for more information on checks that you can perform.

When To Perform Reality Checks

  • Do a reality check whenever you see a dream sign.
  • Do a reality check when you get out of bed in the morning.
  • Do reality checks periodically throughout the day. This may result in you performing a periodic reality check during your dream.
